Powerplants welcomes new General Manager

Powerplants, a premier supplier of greenhouse technology to Australia’s Hydroponic Industry, has appointed well-known Nursery Industry identity Simon Gomme to the position of General Manager. Working closely with Carl van Loon, director and founder of Powerplants, Simon will oversee the day-to-day operations of the business.

In his role, Simon will also focus on sales and marketing. His main goal is to identify new business opportunities, whether promoting existing products in previously un-entered markets, or creating new products for the existing greenhouse market. One area the company will expand is in export, feeling that the timing is right, as many solutions that Powerplants has innovated will be transferable to providing hydroponic and nursery solutions around the world.

Carl will gradually shift his focus from his mainly sales and management role to concentrate more on product development and research as well as working more strategically with key customers and with allied companies to find solutions to key greenhouse industry issues. In addition, he will continue his work helping progress the industry as a whole as the President of the Hydroponic Farmers Federation (HFF).

Simon and Carl met at Burnley Hort College (Melbourne University) and while studying, Carl founded Powerplants. Simon went on to work around the world, first at Findons in England in bedding plant and young plant production. He then moved to Colegrave Seeds, where he met up with Carl again as a Powerplants customer. When Ball Horticulture Co. bought Colegrave, he became Managing Director of the Australian operations, then onto managing their Asian and subsidiaries, while living in Japan.

“I’m thrilled that Simon has finally joined the team. I believe that together with Simon, we will be recognised as a world-class horticultural technology provider and eventually become an international company.”

Both Carl and Simon believe that by listening to their customers and guiding the development of new products that solve their problems, and by providing solutions to the industry as a whole, Powerplants will soon be ready help the horticulture industry worldwide.
